COLENCO CEO Nikola Bitrak Leads Discussion on Renewable Energy Integration at Trebinje Energy Summit

COLENCO, a leading company in the energy sector recently, as a co-organizer, participated in the Energy Summit in Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The company’s CEO, Nikola Bitrak, played a leading role by moderating a key panel discussion titled “Planning Development and Management of Power Systems with the Aim of Increasing RES Integration and Accelerating Energy Transition.”

The summit, which took place from March 20-22, 2024, was a key regional event focusing on energy transition and decarbonization in the Western Balkans. COLENCO’s participation underscored the company’s commitment to shaping a sustainable energy future for the region.

The panel discussion, led by Bitrak, addressed crucial aspects of integrating renewable energy sources (RES) into the Western Balkans’ transmission grid.

Key topics included:

Challenges and opportunities of increasing RES capacity

The role of battery energy storage (BES) in grid stability

Enhancing regional cooperation and grid interconnection

Streamlining procedures for connecting RES facilities

Cybersecurity considerations for integrating new technologies

COLENCO believes that a collaborative approach is essential for a successful RES integration strategy in the Western Balkans. The company is committed to working with governments, regional bodies, and industry stakeholders to develop a robust and secure electricity grid powered by clean energy sources.

The aim is to accelerate the ambitious goals of the energy transition, and one of the crucial pillars is the development of a stable and reliable electrical energy system. This can only be achieved through mutual coordination in the Southeast Europe region, necessitating the accelerated development of interconnected transmission lines, internal transmission rings, conversion of some existing thermal power plants into synchronous compensators to ensure additional inertia and frequency stability. To ensure the reliability of the power system during the integration of grid-forming inverters and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), special attention should be paid to cybersecurity and regional alignment of regulations and appropriate legislative frameworks.
