Powering Nepal’s Future: COLENCO Supports the Development of a Stronger and More Resilient Electricity Network
COLENCO has signed its first contract financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the implementation of the SASEC Electricity Transmission and Distribution System Strengthening Project (ETDSP) in Nepal. COLENCO will deliver the assignment together with the Japanese engineering consultancy Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. and COLENCO Consulting Limited Nigeria, for the client Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
The project aims to strengthen and modernize Nepal’s electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure through the development of the country’s strategic 220 kV and 400 kV East-West transmission backbone. This infrastructure will facilitate the transmission of electricity from hydropower generation hubs to consumers across the country, improve the reliability and flexibility of the national power system and support cross-border electricity exchange with India.
The consulting assignment covers project implementation support for several major transmission, substation and distribution packages. The services include design review and verification, construction supervision, quality assurance and inspection, contract management, environmental and social safeguards, health and safety management, testing and commissioning support, as well as capacity building and knowledge transfer to NEA’s technical teams.
The project components include the construction and expansion of 400 kV, 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines and substations, together with the reinforcement and expansion of distribution networks in Karnali Province and parts of Gandaki Province. The assignment is expected to be implemented over a period of approximately 54 months.
Through this assignment, COLENCO and its partners will contribute to increasing Nepal’s transmission capacity, facilitating the integration of electricity generated by hydropower plants, strengthening electricity supply in the western part of the country, and supporting the long-term development of a reliable and resilient power system.
