Project Kick-Off: Supporting Smart Grid Infrastructure Planning and Development in Macedonia
This week marked the official launch of the project “Supporting Smart Grid Infrastructure Planning and Development to Facilitate Accelerated and Reliable Renewable Energy (RE) Absorption”, a major step toward advancing Macedonia’s clean energy future.
Focusing on climate change mitigation, this important initiative is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and co-funded by Bloomberg Philanthropy and the Austria Sub-Account HIPCA (High Impact Partnership and Climate Action), making it a multi-donor project guided by the EBRD.
COLENCO is honored to lead this transformative effort in partnership with DNV, with MEPSO and the Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources as our valued clients.
Project Goals
Support Macedonia’s transition to a low-carbon energy sector by phasing out coal
Integrate 1.7 GW of renewable energy sources (RES)
Strengthen the national grid for improved energy security and sustainability
Reduce CO₂ emissions and enhance air quality
Key focus area :
Development of a comprehensive grid Masterplan for renewable energy integration
Upgrading the 400 kV national transmission grid
Addressing technical barriers to large-scale renewable integration
